Mastering Number

At St Peter’s, we use the NCETM Mastering Number programme across EYFS, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 to develop pupils’ fluency, confidence and flexibility with number. The programme supports children in building a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and securing the number knowledge needed for future learning.

In EYFS and Key Stage 1, pupils take part in daily Mastering Number sessions that focus on developing strong number sense. Through mathematical talk, practical resources and carefully sequenced activities, children explore key concepts such as subitising, number composition, number bonds and the relationships between numbers.

In Key Stage 2, Mastering Number continues to strengthen pupils’ fluency through focused teaching of additive and multiplicative facts, helping children to recall key number facts efficiently and apply them accurately in a range of mathematical contexts.

Mathematical concepts are taught explicitly, revisited regularly and connected to prior learning. Opportunities to explain reasoning, discuss strategies and make mathematical connections help pupils to develop a secure understanding of number and calculation.

Impact: Pupils develop strong number sense, secure recall of key number facts and increased confidence when calculating and solving problems. This enables them to access the wider mathematics curriculum successfully and achieve well as mathematicians.
