Art and Design Technology

Art DT

INTENT: At St Peter’s, our Art and Design and Design Technology curriculum develops creativity, confidence and practical skills. From the Early Years, pupils explore materials and construction, building strong foundations for creative and technical learning. Pupils develop knowledge of key artists, designers and engineers, alongside visual elements and design principles. They are encouraged to experiment, solve problems and evaluate their work. Oracy is prioritised so pupils can discuss ideas using subject-specific vocabulary. Knowledge and skills are carefully sequenced to ensure progression across art disciplines and DT processes, including structures, mechanisms, textiles and cooking.

IMPLEMENTATION:  Art and DT are taught through a progressive curriculum designed with consultants from Primary Art Skills and HEPP DT, ensuring clear progression from Reception to Year 6. Learning builds on prior knowledge, with retrieval supporting retention.  In Art, pupils develop skills across disciplines and study a diverse range of artists. In DT, pupils follow the design, make and evaluate process, developing practical skills across a range of contexts.  Oracy is embedded through discussion and evaluation. Adaptive teaching ensures all pupils are supported and challenged. Cross-curricular links enhance relevance.  Assessment is ongoing through observation, outcomes and discussion, enabling teachers to track progress and inform teaching.

IMPACT:  Pupils develop secure knowledge and skills, demonstrated through sketchbooks, practical outcomes and discussion. They confidently create, design and evaluate using subject vocabulary. Assessment shows good progress from starting points, with skills building over time. By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils are creative, reflective and well prepared for further learning.
