Religious Education

INTENT: At St Peter’s, our Religious Education curriculum develops pupils’ understanding of religion and belief, encouraging them to explore questions of meaning, purpose and identity. It is rooted in our Mustard Seed vision, nurturing growth, aspiration and potential, and is underpinned by our Christian values. Pupils gain knowledge of Christianity as a global faith alongside other principal religions and worldviews, developing respect for diversity and challenging prejudice. They are encouraged to reflect on their own beliefs and values, building a strong sense of identity and belonging. The curriculum promotes empathy, respect and responsibility, enabling pupils to engage thoughtfully with others and contribute positively to life in a diverse society.
IMPLEMENTATION: RE is taught through the Manchester Diocese Syllabus, providing a coherent and progressive curriculum aligned with national expectations. Learning is sequenced to build knowledge over time, balancing depth and coverage across Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Humanism and non-religious worldviews. Pupils engage with key texts, beliefs and practices, and explore how religion influences individuals and society. Lessons promote discussion and reflection, supporting oracy and deeper thinking. A spiral approach ensures key concepts are revisited and developed across year groups. Teaching is adapted through scaffolding, questioning and inclusive strategies. Cross-curricular links and the liturgical calendar further enrich learning.
IMPACT: Pupils develop secure knowledge and understanding of religions and worldviews, demonstrated through discussion, written work and reflection. They show respect for different beliefs and can articulate their ideas clearly. Assessment is ongoing and systematic, using half-termly assessments, quizzes and reflection books to track progress and inform teaching. By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils are reflective, respectful and knowledgeable learners who embody the school’s values and are well prepared to engage with religion and belief in the modern world.
Parents/carers have the right to withdraw their child from all or part of Religious Education. If you wish to discuss this, please contact the school so that appropriate arrangements can be made.
