Welcome to Year 5
Year 5 will be taught this year by Mr Hickey and Mrs Walker
What a fantastic morning Year 5 had with Mr Derbyshire learning all about space and asteroids! We learnt so much from him and we were able to handle a huge range of artefacts from space which he brought in specially. A great way to finish our science topic Earth and Space.
Mr Hickey has now joined Year 5 and is looking forward to taking over the class when Mrs Hepworth leaves for maternity at the end of this half term.
Topics and events to look forward to over Spring term:
- South America
- The Amazon
- Asteroid Workshop - Mr Derbyshire: Monday 16th January 2017
- Trip to John Rylands Library - Monday 6th February 2017
Topics throughout the year:
- Vikings and Anglo-Saxons
- South America
Our Sports Hall session is every Thursday; however, children will need to keep their PE kit in school at all times as sessions may change.
We are currently trialling a new homework system whereby children will be asked to complete a small amount of homework every night focusing on areas which are important elements of your child’s learning. These will be:
- Learn class and individual spellings
- Learn timestables
- Read their reading/library book.
The children will have homework books which will need to be ticked and signed every night by an adult and checked every morning by myself or Mrs Walker.
If they do not have their diary signed, then the children will need to stay in at dinner time to practise these.
Children will receive spellings related to our current topic at the end of every term in preparation for weekly spelling tests over the course of the next term.
In addition to these topic spellings, children will also be given 5 spellings to learn fortnightly taken from the National Curriculum. These will be tested in a 1:1 session with the teaching assistant.
